Phase 1: Where We Started

When we purchased the house, the kitchen was undeniably the first room to get attention. The existing decor was very dated, minimal cabinetry, little usable counter space, inadequate electrical systems, and the appliances were all on life support. Part of the charm of this house was the knowledge that we would be rebuilding the kitchen from scratch&emdash; and able to design it as close to our desires as practical.

When our purchase offer was accepted, we were already hitting the kitchen centers and Home Depot looking for ideas and gauging the prices. All that was left to do was close on the new house, pack up the old one, move, unpack, ... in reality, the visits to the kitchen centers were a welcome diversion from all of the chaos that comes with buying a house and moving. The magnitude of this project was still a long way off from hitting us!

But let's start from the beginning. Let's start the tour by showing you what we had to work with...

Lovely walnut (faux) paneling covered all of the walls. Removing the paneling was easy- wiping up the tears after we saw the pea-green linoleum that was under the paneling (and that took the plaster off with it) took more time!

The 1970's aura was replete with a harvest gold counter and chocolate brown carpeting... the only thing missing was avocado green appliances or an orange dinette set! One good thing that we kept was the separate pantry.

The old kitchen had one wall of cabinets, one counter with the sink, and an open shelving unit. There were also two large windows which limited what we could move. Overall, this kitchen was in need of a complete renovation, from top to bottom... and then some.
